By Tammie Caldwell

A visit to a dental clinic can be scary at best. Very little people enjoy frequenting a dentists offices. However, despite the phobias we have developed regarding dentistry, visiting a dentist Waterford MI for such hygiene is of paramount importance. Such oral hygienists are highly trained and educated professionals and they study for years to become what they are. Regular visits to an oral hygienist - a healthcare professional who specializes on conditions of oral cavities is very important.

Indeed, the role of such practitioners is highly under-valued and estimated. However, bad hygiene can lead to major and life threatening conditions like heart problems. For these reasons you must visit an oral hygienists office not less than once in a year and go for a full check-up. Try not to put the trip off this year!

The work done by such doctors is invaluable. They can do re-constructive or restoration work like putting in crowns and constructing bridges. Furthermore they also put in orthodontics or braces when needed (not a nice operation) and do root canals.

Such doctors can also prescribe medication like fluorides, antibiotics, painkillers, sedatives and hypnotics. Indeed, some dentists specialize in Periodontology or the study and treatment of diseased gums and the placement of dental implants. They need to go for more training in order to carry out more complex operations like general anaesthesia.

Many free dental clinics exist as not everybody can afford dental care. Various governments around the world make this possible as part of their free health care. Universities also, at times, offer free dental clinics. A well known South African free dental clinic is the Wits (University of the Witwatersrand) dental clinic. In the states there are also many free dental clinics.

If such work sounds appealing to you and you believe dentistry is your calling then you must complete your high school and get a first degree degree before taking the Dental Admission Test or DAT. As entry to dental school is highly competitive to say the least good marks are essential and as such the American Dental Association advises students to take the DAT test a year before admission.

When it comes to the question of why many individuals are scared of dental surgeons or suffer dental phobia might still be a question without an answer but there are certain theories which attempt to answer this question. Lets start of with a definition. Dental anxiety or dental phobia is the fear of receiving dental care. In fact it is estimated that as much as two thirds of Americans suffer some degree of dental anxiety whilst 5-10% suffer from dental phobia as a result of a negative direct experience undergoing a dental procedure.

To conclude, a lot of people are scared of going to dental clinics as a result of an irrational phobia or a direct painful or uncomfortable dental experience. Such practitioners, however, are trained professionals and such hygiene is of utmost concern as bad dental health can lead to heart conditions amongst other health problems.
