Zumba - Putting the fun back into your exercise routine

By Lawrie Laugg

Getting fit and staying fit is important for males and females of all ages. Maintaining a proper fitness is great on your well-being, and everyone usually finds themselves in better moods and also sleeping better when exercising regularly... but therein lies the question: what is the best way to stay fit? While TV advertisements promote gym equipment that will help you 'get fit with only 3 minutes exercise a day', these are extremely unrealistic expectations, and these adverts get heavy debate from many different parties.

While exercising in your home may seem like a good idea - whether you use your own gym equipment of go out for a walk/run - it's extremely hard to keep yourself motivated, as there will always be other things that need doing around the house. Joining a gym, on the other hand, isn't the best option out there either, as (without joining with a special deal), gym memberships can be extremely expensive. Some memberships can get as high as $25.00 a week! That's around $1,300 a year, making it a costly option. Also, without a personal trainer, it's hard to know what equipment to use to exercise a particular part of your body.

One exercise that is 'sweeping the nation with the dance sensation' is Zumba. This exercise is becoming well-known all around the world, and is a fun way to get yourself fit and burn those calories. Perfect for both males and females of all ages, Zumba is suitable for everyone, as it has easy to follow steps in the routine. This Latin inspired dance fitness programme will help target your abs, legs, arms and glutes - this fat burning exercise routine is designed to also be extremely fun!

Unlike the gym, Zumba classes in your area already have set timetables - so rather than being on your own exercise routine (which can go up and down depending on your mood), you are more likely to attend every Zumba class. Zumba prices vary between locations, but there is usually a casual visit price and a 10 session price, so once you've visited once and you're happy to continue, you can save money by purchasing a session card.

No matter what your fitness level is, there is a fitness class to suit you. Generally, there are three main types of Zumba classes: Zumba Gold, Zumba Fitness and Zumba Toning. Zumba Gold is for those who have physical limitations, and is the easiest of the 3 classes. Zumba Fitness combines both fast and slow rhythms, easy-to-follow steps and allows intervals throughout the class. And finally, the third class is Zumba Toning, which uses light weight toning sticks which assist in toning your muscles.

Studies have shown that people are more likely to work out when inviting a friend - so choose a friend or two to bring to your first Zumba class, and enjoy the Latin-inspired dance with your mates. Ready to go ahead with your first class? To find out about your local Zumba timetable sessions, contact your local Zumba instructor - they'll be able to tell you which class is best suited to you, and inform you about pricing options.
