Nutritional Tips For You And Your Family

By Sandra Taylor

Many people find themselves ingesting a diet which is less than healthy, partly because they think that it is too difficult to eat a healthy one, partly because it seems expensive and partly, because they are not sure what is important to eat. Here are some tips to help you sort it out.

Scour the labels of prepackaged foods. Sometimes a product labeled "reduced-fat" might still have high sugar or salt content, and also include other unhealthy ingredients. Aggressive weight-loss goals can rarely be reached by relying on processed foods. A label needs to have ingredients you can read. Refrain from buying a product that lists numerous artificial ingredients on the label.

Try being a vegetarian at least one day a week. A vegetarian is in some ways healthier than being a meat eater. Even if you are not ready to make a leap to complete vegetarianism, you can get some of the benefits of a vegetarian diet by taking a break from meat completely one day every week.

Add more whole and cut up fruit to your diet. Fruit, not fruit juice, supplies your body with the fiber it needs to function properly and to ward off diseases like cancer. The fiber makes it filling also. Fruit is a great source of important nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, and folic acid. Fruit can also satisfy cravings for sweets.

Make sure you eat foods containing vitamin C everyday. Humans are unable to produce or store vitamin C and deficiency can cause soft gums, skin hemorrhages, brittle teeth and nails, slow wound healing, anemia and eventually scurvy. Good sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits like limes, lemons and oranges.

To improve your diet, you may want to consider reducing the amount of meat and dairy you consume. You don't have to go completely vegetarian, but try cutting out meat from one or two dinners per week at first. There are lots of tasty and nutritious alternatives to meat available at any grocery store.

One aspect of healthy eating is sugar reduction. Sometimes it isn't true that fruit juice is better for you than soda. Strangely, some brands of fruit juice are actually more sugary than soda. So you always want to be aware of the sugar content of the drinks you consume.

Although most nutritionists agree that small, frequent meals and even the occasional scheduled snack is a highly effective plan for healthy eating, ALL agree that these snacks should be some approximation of nutritious. Some people mistakenly tell themselves that a small, unhealthy snack is preferable to simply going without food for extended periods of time, but this is dangerous thinking. Limit yourself to one or two nutrient-rich, healthy, filling snacks per day.

To cleanse your colon, look for nutrient rich foods that are rich in fiber. Fiber works as a natural laxative, making it a perfect choice for colon cleansing. To keep your health optimal, you should be sure to consume plenty of nutrients while you cleanse. Foods like green peas, spinach, and kidney beans will cleanse your colon while providing your body with vitamins and minerals.

To add some flavor to your meals, fresh herbs are a wonderful option. You can grow them yourself in your kitchen, or you can buy them fresh from your local farmers market or grocery store. Adding herbs to your meals will add a ton of flavor to your cooking.

Eat about six small meals a day. Your body processes food differently when that food is spread into smaller portions, more often during the day. Your insulin levels will not spike and there are positive effects on your metabolism, as well. Fill the meals with fruits and vegetables, for optimal results.

Slap some peaches, apples, pineapple, banana and other fruit on the grill and get ready for a real treat! Fresh fruit makes a wonderful addition to a backyard cookout. You don't have to eat it raw though! Cook it right alongside the lean hamburger and turkey franks!

Encourage your child to try new foods but don't force them to eat something if they don't like it. Try and have them taste a food on more than one occasion to see if they like it and if they don't, don't keep forcing them to eat it. You don't want them to come to dread meal time.

Nutrition may be a difficult topic, but it surely is not untouchable. Take some time to even reread this article and try to apply the advice found in it. You will find yourself happier and healthier, all because you decided on nutrition. It won't come easily at first, but be patient and come back to this article, as needed.
