By Ines Flores

If an individual has undergone surgery to produce weight loss, this creates a need for change in the diet in order to facilitate healing from the surgery and also to lose and maintain the loss of extra weight. This can be a bit frustrating for someone who is used to eating a certain way. But, there are tasty bariatric friendly protein shakes that one can consume which helps to make things easier.

Healing is one of the most important concerns following any type of surgery and one that is done for weight loss is no different. During the first four weeks after the operation, one has to be on a liquid diet. This means drinking smoothies or shakes during this period. The protein intake is higher than it usually is for a normal person which helps to facilitate healing.

Some of the foods that can be used are milk, cottage cheese, ricotta, yogurt, and whey protein powder. Since some people might be lactose intolerant there are substitutes that can be used in their place like soy milk, tofu, and other non-dairy milks. These are the main foods for adding body and richness in addition to other necessary nutrients.

Another component to the smoothie is fruit which should be fresh. This could be fruit that is in season and that one really likes. Some prefer to use frozen fruits since these are usually prepared and ready to use. Sometimes canned fruits can be used but it is important to read the labels to be sure there is no additional sugar added. Additional sweeteners can be used, but are not usually necessary.

For some people, fruit is not enough to make things sweet. In this case, an individual can use sweeteners that are low in calories instead of regular sugar. It is important that there are no additional calories from regular sugar because this is one of the main causes of weight gain. There are also natural sweeteners that are very low in calories that are from natural sources which are safe to use.

Fiber is also an important ingredient in smoothies especially when one is recovering from surgery. This ingredient helps everything to move through the body in an efficient manner. There are a number of supplements on the market that contain psyllium powder or one can use flaxseeds which is good for constipation. Others might also come in a number of flavors depending on what one needs.

Nut butters are also a great choice which adds a certain amount of fat to the smoothie. It also helps to create a creamy texture which is quite appealing and helps to hold everything together. Many times they also contain vitamin E and A which help to speed up the healing process. Nut butters are also good because they are easier to digest and to blend in smoothies than whole nuts.

In addition to the above, one should also consider their preferences for certain foods and if there are substitutions that can be made. If one lives in the city of Kernersville, NC, there are health food stores that one can visit to purchase ingredients they can use. However, one should always check with their physician before making a decision.
