Benefit From Using Elderly Walkers

By Jennie Sandoval

Anyone who has difficulty getting around and suffers from arthritis, muscle-bone ailments, or issues with their balance will find that if they use these tips on elderly walkers, they can improve their mobility. The three basic equipment styles plus accessories makes remaining mobile easy. There are also tips on how to avoid falls or injury when using one.

The basic model has no wheels on it and so the person using it has to lift it and move it forward. On the opposite end of the spectrum is a model with a wheel on each of the four legs. Because it moves forward easily, it is best if the person using has balance enough to not lean on it. Leaning on the four wheel style can cause a fall. Another type has a wheel on the two front legs, allowing easy movement. The lack of wheels on the back legs helps to prevent falls. If choosing the two wheel style, be certain there are rubber tips on the back legs to prevent slippage.

Selecting the correct grip will prevent pain from stress on the joints. Choose a large size if you have trouble grasping items with your fingers. If your hands get sweaty, a soft foam style will work best. Also, make certain it is attached securely to avoid falls.

The next important step when purchasing the equipment is to make certain it is comfortable when in use. Check the bend of the elbow and the location of the wrist. The elbow should be comfortable and the wrist needs to be parallel with the top of the walker. Try it out and walk across the room with it. Protect your back by standing upright while using it and walk into it, not behind it.

There are also accessories for walkers that make life easier. A person can choose a food tray that will carry their drinks and food. A pouch or bag can be attached for carrying magazines or books. There are also seats and baskets available for use.

The people who benefit most from this type of equipment are anyone with a muscle-bone ailment, arthritis, or a neurological issue. The idea that only senior citizens need to use the walker is not correct. Young people, teens, and adults can all suffer with some type of balance problem, breathing issues, or heart disease, making it a challenge to move about on their own.

When ever using this equipment to provide support, it is still possible to experience a fall if care is not taken. Always, correctly adjust the height before using, secure the handgrips and make certain they are the proper type and are fitted correctly. Do not wear house slippers when using as they may slide out from under the person. Be sure there are rubber tips on the legs without wheels. Also, accident proof the area by moving items out of the way.

Use these Tips on elderly walkers when considering a purchase. Anyone, young or old, having difficulty with balance, experiences joint pain, muscle-bone ailments, has heart issues, or difficulty breathing will be able to boost their mobility with a walker. There are different styles with accessories to fit any lifestyle.
