All About Customized Shoe Orthotics

By Kathryn Neal

Custom shoe orthotics are inserts that are placed in shoes that are made specifically for that person. They are personally fitted to the wearer's shoe size, shape of their foot and any foot problems they are dealing with.

A physician might prescribe a patient shoe inserts for a variety of reasons. These prescription inserts are helpful for treating ailments like flat feet, bone spurs, plantar fasciitis or a chronic problem with pain. They are also used as a treatment option for many cases of spinal ailments.

Orthotics from the store are often the first thing sufferers turn to. With uncomfortable materials like cork and rubber, they are a cheaper alternative and this is appealing when insurance won't cover the cost of custom inserts. Many people believe it to be the better option for them, but in reality, it often just creates more problems to deal with.

The one major problem with using store bought, versus prescription, inserts is the minimal help they often provide. Store bought inserts are created to fit a generalized population so they often don't fit as well as they should. Real foot ailments do not benefit from this. While the cost may be much less, the usefulness is no where near what prescription inserts are.

Another problem users often encounter is new problems being created by inserts bought from the store. A mistake in the type of support can be a bigger issue then the original problem not being addressed. Doctors can prevent this by doing tests to determine exactly what the problem is and creating a plan to help. The doctor can also be certain the inserts are for the problems the patient is experiencing.

A physician or a chiropractor can fit a patient with customized inserts. The feet are measured and images are taken. Those images are then sent to an orthotics lab that will create a set of inserts to specifically address that person's issues. After the lab receives the images, it normally takes about a week for them to be constructed, from start to finish. In rare cases, in might take longer, but they could also be completed in only a few days in some cases as well.

The overall quality of the materials used in custom inserts are easily far superior to those of the other variety. Durable and comfortable materials, such as leather, are often found in customized versions. Materials are uniquely chosen for each prescription so they each set of inserts best meets the needs of that specific patient.

Customized versions of orthotics can be created to handle excessive amounts of weight. Additional support for the heel, arch or even the entire foot can also be added. Construction materials such as leather make them more comfortable to wear than store bought versions as well. These added elements are one of the primary reasons they are much better than store bought versions.

Chronic foot pain and other feet or spine related issues can effectively be treated with prescription shoe orthotics. A simple visit to a family physician or a chiropractor can quickly get anyone the help they may be needing for these types of issues.
