The sport is of international caliber, being practiced at many world class competitions such as the Olympics. In such competitions as the Olympics, the sport is governed by an international body. All countries in the world have local bodies that manage the standards of the sport within their boundaries. Each of those local bodies have some affiliation with the international governing body.

Individuals whose specialty lies in gymnastics are referred to as gymnasts and they might be females or males. Gymnasts begin performing at varied ages. Classes meant for little kids as young 18 months old are there. This category is referred to as kindergym. Other levels comprise of participants of five years, 24 years, and so on. Each class of participation calls for a certain degree of skills and experience with the greatest level being at international games.

Gymnastic encompasses various disciplines, which are all performed by athletes of world class. Some of these disciplines are team gym, tumbling, trampolining, aerobic, acrobatic, and artistic gymnastics. The most famous, which is the most practiced category too is artistic gymnastic. This category entails disciplines for both male and female participants. People of the same sex compete in each class of events. Apart from being a very competitive sport, gymnastic could be exercised as a recreational event.

The competitive version of the game can be exercised in both indoor and outdoor environments. The gymnasts perform while the judges, normally sitting at a higher position award marks. The scoring system is based on a score called an execution score. Execution score limits the total number of points one can ever achieve to 10. The judge subtracts points from the 10 points based on how efficient the gymnast is. What remains after the gymnast is through is also their final score.

Currently however, there is a new system of awarding points called the difficulty score. This score has no limit to the number of points a person can score. It is based on the level of difficulty of the events one performs and how efficient they are performed. The score also bases on whether one completes all the events or fails to do so.

Difficulty score system is presently in use within the United States. It is viewed as a revolution in the sport altogether. This score system has made gymnasts to invest more efforts in executing skills well. They also try to learn how to link skills to each other when performing. Infact properly linked elements when performing can earn the contestant many marks since it is a key field considered during awarding of marks.
