An Introduction to Nutrition and Hydration

By Tran Taranpado

In modern times, the level of competition in youth sports has become quite competitive. It becomes important that athletes approach their sport from all angles to be able to perform well. They should not focus solely on physical play. For any competitive player, nutrition and hydration are very vital aspects of their game. What you put into your body is also as important as your performance in the game.

On many occasions, plenty of young athletes do not consider incorporating nutrition and hydration in their to-do list. However, it's a fact that in any hard workout, an athlete will sweat. When an athlete sweats, it is not just water that is lost from the body. Sweating also makes the body lose nutrients, electrolytes and minerals. What people don't realize is that losing electrolytes is quite important.

An electrolyte is something that helps carry electrical messages that is sent by the brain and subsequently transmitted to other parts of the body. Unlike some other particles like fat, carbos or proteins, these components are not stored anywhere at all in your body. Electrolytes, once shed by the body, are gone forever. The consequence of this is that the brain signals become weaker as more and more electrolytes are lost from the body.

When the signal from your brain weakens, it can have very dire results. Muscles have the possibility of cramping up. You will lose some mental focus and you will react more slowly. This has the potential to affect the player's overall performance.

Make sure that the drink you take to replenish electrolytes has a good balance of carbs and sugars. This is because the more sugar and carbs that an electrolyte drink has, the more energy is required by the body so that it can absorb the electrolytes. If there are fewer carbs and sugar in the drink, it becomes easier for the body to absorb the electrolytes from the drink.

It is important to understand that what you do to your body outside of the game is equally important as what you do when in the game. Make sure that you keep yourself hydrated all throughout the activity. Doing this is vital to preserving good health.
