Why Pregnant Women Need Iron Supplements

By Terry T. Wilsone

There are many things to think about with iron supplements for a new mother. It is possible to have an excess of iron in your diet, however, that is a rare problem for women. On the contrary, women tend to lower levels of iron. Many women feel more nauseous than usual during pregnancy if they take iron. It is strongly advised to develop a few methods in advance to deal with the symptoms should one have need of iron.

Occasional anecdotal evidence suggests eating a small starchy meal before taking these supplements. Typically when one are taking medication it is recommended that this person should eat something just before hand. Different foods have different effects, and different people respond differently so some discovery may be required. Physicians say that every pregnancy is unique so it may well be that a little experimentation is needed. The mother-to-be shouldn't push herself, work gradually to find what will work best for her.

It is possible that other minerals such as, iron supplements, may be recommended beyond generic supplements. It is common for the pregnant mom to stop taking recommend pills if she has a bad reaction to them. It is advised to speak with the doctor before making any changes. There may be alternate choices for these nutrients that could be less unpleasant for the new mother. Also, there may be some other reason for the nausea. It is always possible that another medical issue is an underlying cause instead of morning sickness or the iron. Even though there may be a lot of false alarms, it is important to consult with a professional.

With or without iron, prenatal vitamins are usually prescribed. Vitamins are good for moms-to-be, even if minerals such as, iron aren't included. The growing fetus will probably be able to get all of its nutrition from the mother's body. Because of this, the body tends to let the baby get priority of the nutrients, so the mother can wind up with a deficiency. Lack of required nutrients can lead to things like anemia or vitamin deficiencies. That pregnancy can render a woman too ill to properly care for her child when it arrives. So, it is important to follow the doctor's advice.

The time to really become concerned about pregnancy health is before getting pregnant in the first place. There are a lot of nutrients that young women may lack, such as, folic acid or iron. During the time one thinks about becoming a mother is when she should be focusing on improving health. Obesity or being out of shape makes pregnancy more difficult. It is, of course, highly suggested that you receive your vitamins and nutrients from food naturally, rather than pills. However, this can be a difficult challenge for anyone. In spite of this, you should try and at least keep track of the nutrition that you are getting. Antioxidant rich plants can be a good source of vitamins and minerals, as well as, dried fruits and vegetables.
