2 Essentials for Keeping your Immune System in Good Health

By Brad Wilson

All in all, your immune system does a fantastic job of setting up a line of defence against infection, disease-causing bacteria and microorganisms . Most of the time your body's defences fight off infection and diseases without you even being aware . Nonetheless, at times the immune system requires a little help . Things like improper diet, pollution, synthetic medications, and chemical exposure can cause your immune system to become compromised and leave you vulnerable to sickness .

When this occurs, the first question you may ask is: how do I prevent this? ? Researchers are still struggling to answer this and other questions, although many studies are often undertaken to discover precisely how the immune system functions and how it can be made stronger . One of the most important, however, is whether or not we have the ability to enhance our immune system through supplements, lifestyle changes, and dietary means .

Although research findings are still at the preliminary stage, while researchers continue to decipher and understand immune system responses, most findings prove that it can be enhanced and made stronger allowing it to provide more effective performance.

Ways of Enhancing Immune System Functionality

Vitamin D - A study at a Copenhagen University has directly linked the immune system with Vitamin D . According to their scientific research, vitamin D is an essential part of activating the defences in our immune system that allow it to react to and protect us from infections in the body .

The immune system comprises of cells known as T-cells . These cells are harmless when they are inactive. However, these cells act as high-powered agents, to equal James Bond, when they are 'awakened' by Vitamin D. They attack and kill foreign pathogens, like viruses and bacteria that could make us sick .

This importance isn't really news . For years, doctors have known the impact vitamin D has had for certain illnesses, such as tuberculosis . They found that this property was responsible for causing an antimicrobial reaction in the immune system, enabling it to combat the bacteria common in tuberculosis .

Luckily, vitamin D isn't hard to come by . It is available in fruit, vegetables, supplements and sunlight .

Probiotics- Probiotics are good bacteria, like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, that live within your digestive tract . This healthy bacteria can have a significant impact on your immune system, such as determining the number of T-cells present and correcting deficiencies within your system . While the connection is still be researched, probiotics are thought to improve immune function by restoring the microbial balance in the intestines, which reduces the amount of pathogens and toxins that are created in the body .

Occurring naturally in the human intestinal tract, probiotics are also present in the genital and urinary tracts . They can be taken as supplements or can be found in such fermented food products as yogurt or buttermilk. Although some packaged foods claim to have a probiotic content, a study by the American Academy of Microbiology in 2006 indicates that there is some doubt about the quality of these probioitics . Your best bet is to take probiotics in the form of quality supplements .

These are the two essential and easy elements to improving your immune system and equipping it to resist harmful bacteria . To combat your next cold, take probiotics and vitamin.
