The Inspiration for Kettlebell Exercises

By Rob Sutter

Everyone should well of the trend that is called kettlebell training. The form of working out called kettlebell exercises is used in order to gain a great sense of weight loss and body toning. What most people may not comprehend, though, is that these originated from the practices of Chinese Shaolin monks several centuries ago. They put stone weights to use and people today can see them in the form of stone locks, padlocks in particular. The Chinese knew back then what we would go on to comprehend later: an unorthodox yet effective form of exercise.

There's a sense of variation in the stone padlocks today as opposed to kettlebells endorsed by companies like Lorna. These particular padlocks look like traditional weights unlike those utilized for kettlebell exercises. The handle doesn't exactly come out from the weight but rather is in line with the rest of said weight. Stone lock training has become important in the realm of martial arts training in China. Those in the Imperial Army had to be trained to put the stone blocks to use.

The use of the stone locks came into notoriety during the Ming and Ching dynasties. They are prominently utilized today by the Shaolin monks as they condition themselves for martial arts. The stone moving was used in ancient Wushu, and the first primitive barbells were made during this period as well.

These blocks may possess an awkward unbalance and while it may be the same in practice, masters in China can manipulate these devices any way they see fit. One area of international competition called the kettlebell snatch is done in China. Swings and other maneuvers are put to use to determine the victor. To add further challenge, smaller, lighter locks are brought into the air and competitors must catch them in many ways.

Today, we can refer to these modified stone locks by the name of kettlebells. It's surprising to see that these have been used for over fifteen hundred years at this point, dating back to Ming and Ching dynasties. They were used to build muscle as well as speed for competitors so that workouts, as well as competitions, became that much more effective. The popularity of kettlebells continues to grow at an alarming rate and we may soon become as learned as the Chinese were when this trend truly originated.
