Emergency medical staff will receive a much broader range of training and refresher courses than specialists working in other areas of the hospital. This is required as they deal with every possible illness and injury over the course of a normal year. They will also need to be particularly adept at communicating with patients. This is vital in order to calm distressed patients and to investigate symptoms and diagnose problems.

Emergency, life saving procedures are an integral part of ER staff's daily routine. It is therefore essential that they are fully up to speed with all of the latest procedures. The work in an ER is usually very time sensitive, making it one of the most stressful areas to work. After stabilizing a condition and diagnosing it, the ER staff will then transfer the patient to the relevant department.

There are usually different areas to a hospital that all have their specific function. This might be oncology, for the treatment of cancer. It might be cardiology for the treatment of heart related problems. There are also many other departments, such as physiotherapy, radiology, OB-GYN and general surgery. Each section will have wards where patients are given day to day care. Doctors trained in their particular disciplines will always be as close as possible to their own patients.
