Debunking Popular Myths On Family Dentistry

By Kerry Rhodes

Keeping the oral health of the family in check is one of the most important responsibilities of the parents. To help them fulfill this task, the parents must learn how to properly take care of their teeth. Sadly, there are a few myths looming around family dentistry Long Island. These misconceptions may prevent one from doing the proper procedures. Here are a few myths that you must not believe.

Dentists are only necessary when experiencing dental problems. For many people, the services of a dentist is only needed during emergencies. They only contact the professional when the patient is suffering from toothache, gum diseases or jaw-related diseases to name a few. Other times, they barely remember the tooth doctor. The truth is, regular dental check-ups can help prevent these problems in the first place.

Chewing some sugar-free gums can replace brushing. This just cannot be true. Although some people may feel the gums to freshen the breath after meals, it does not get anywhere near brushing. For one thing, this does not remove the food particles and dental plaques, which is what brushing does.

Only kids can develop cavities. Apparently, this is not true. While most of the patients suffering from cavities are still children, this does not mean that adults will not develop them. Cavities are present for both young and old. As such, it is important that people from all ages know how to handle it.

Flossing is insignificant. Believing in this myth is very dangerous. Brushing the teeth can remove the food particles in the mouth, but there are a few places that it cannot reach. These areas are best cleaned with the use of floss.

The dental health is not significant. Believing in this myth can be really perilous. Oral health had been linked to overall health. In fact, it has been proven that a person with healthier teeth, gums and mouth has less likelihood of developing strong and heart diseases among other conditions. Hence, it is only right to keep the dental health at its prime.

Others may argue that baby teeth do not need enough care since this is not permanent yet. Although the baby teeth may be replaced with the permanent ones, it must still be taken care of. The condition of this tooth can affect the development of the permanent ones. Misalignment and malocclusion may be due to poorly handled baby teeth.

Seeing a dentist once is enough. On the contrary, you must visit your dentist regularly. They can provide dental check-up and professional cleaning to ensure a good dental health. To this end, you may look for a package offered by family dentistry Long Island. This must include dental care, diagnosis and emergencies procedures.
