What Kettlebells Did For Me

By Mike Sherman

After numerous months of working out with free weights and not seeing the anticipated results, I decided to look for something else. I found an article online about kettlebells, a new trend in the fitness community. After doing additional research on kettlebells, I found that they looked really interesting and I would give them a shot.

After making the change from free weights to kettlebells, I began looking for fitness clubs or teachers that would show me the appropriate kettlebell workout routines. There happened to be a facility near my house with certified instructors and I got in touch with them about starting. I devised a schedule with the teachers and shortly after commenced my training.

I discovered that as soon as I began working out with kettlebells, I really enjoyed it; it was just what I wanted. I was starting to get improved results, at a quicker pace, and the instructors were pushing me harder than I had been pushing myself. I found that I was thoroughly enjoying the unorthodox style of fitness that is working out with kettlebells. Even though I really liked kettlebell training, I was still yearning for more.

I kept looking for a new program to challenge myself that still incorporated training with kettlebells. I was looking for an all-out, full body program. I wanted to get back to feeling and exercising like an athlete, not simply going to the gym every day. Again I started searching for a way to get me back to a inclusive style of training and came upon CrossFit.

As a former athlete, kettlebells and CrossFit gave me the challenge that I desired and was used to. CrossFit gave me a high intensity, explosive program. It is really demanding on the body, but very rewarding in the results it provides; I felt like I was back in the gym training to become a champion.
