How Marine LED Lights Help Prevent Vision Problems At Night

By Casandra Newton

It is easy to tell the difference between marine LED lights and the older, less effective version of the incandescent bulbs. The obvious improvement in night vision comes from the reduced glare and the pinpointed accuracy of the led version. Night vision can be interrupted by things like bright glare. This is one reason why LED bulbs are now used in almost everything, including running and steaming lights, instruments, and the anchor light. The sharp, clear, and crisp light is less disruptive to the vision of the person doing the navigating.

There is an easy precision about a light that can be solidly seen with clarity but has no glare point. They are most often used in hardware and instrumentation as back lighting so that the information can still be seen without creating retinal distortion. This obviously will make it easier to successfully navigate. Any kind of visual disorientation makes it difficult to stay on course. Even a momentary visual blur can create potential issues.

Hand held instruments also tend to receive this kind of back lighting for the same reason. Incandescent bulbs are bright enough that their use in hand held instruments by another person can still interfere with the night vision of the person at the helm. Night vision issues can lead to serious accidents. This is especially true under tighter navigational areas.

A really great side benefit is that this kind of bulb burns a lot less energy than the incandescent counterpart. The on board batteries are less likely to be drained and withstand the prolonged use of units with LED bulbs much more effectively. Considering the value of each bulb's job, this can make a vital difference when it comes to safety and navigation.

The component of safety cannot be overlooked. When the proper combination of lights is displayed it is an effective form of communication to other vessels. They can tell whether you are moving under power or sail, which direction you are heading, and gather some inclination of the speed you are moving. If you are at anchor, this information is also clear and you can be avoided.

Instrumentation is a component of safety for you as well. It creates a combination of vital statistics that helps you understand exactly where you are, what hazards are around you, and how much water is left to navigate. You can avoid things like running aground, collisions with objects, and ending up in the wrong place.

The only drawback is that while many boats now provide methods for changing just the bulb, older boats often require that you replace the whole unit when the eventual burn out happens. If a running light is down, you may need a whole new running housing instead of a simple replacement bulb. This is actually not a big deal provided that you either have an additional unit on hand or have easy access to one.

Almost all currently produced products rely on marine LED lights instead of the outdated incandescent bulbs. The benefits are numerous and with the enhanced clarity and effectiveness combined with the lower use of energy, the preference of manufacturers is clear. Boat owners also prefer the LED systems for these reasons. Today, it is about ensuring safety while maintaining efficiency and effectiveness while out on the water at night.
